Think you can't have an Altered Body Image? Think Again!
My mom has an altered body image. That was not her main intent.Creating more energy was her intent! She started a new job at the Lutheran Home in Maryland while Dad was hospitalized there. Her new job needed lots of energy , so besides doing her hospice duties-a program for caring for dying people- she started a small exercise program. This is what she did. She started slowly by walking each early morning, outside if the weather allowed it and in the hospital when the weather was bad. She even bought a pair of light weight 2 pound dumbbells to help with arm muscle. It worked well for her and did not build these huge bulging arms but rather trimmed the fat off the back of the arm by firming them up, at the same time as giving her more than enough power to turn heavy patients. It gave her the energy she needed and the strength to help these sick folks. What amazed me was that she did this at age 73. So this shows a couple things ,like when we make up our mind to change how our bodies look and feel and also use a system, it does not make a difference what age we begin. If my mom can do this, then so can we. Mom got stronger for her job and actually lost fat while adding muscle to her small 5'4" 123 pound body. She did not look like a body builder. She simply had a very nice altered body image! The whole family was proud of her. She just looked fit and told us she had more energy than she could remember.
With all the many different kinds of diets out there, how can I make a choice? Which one fits my life style? I mean , if I find it so hard to change and really know change is all I need to get more fit and lose excess pounds and therefore more healthy, which plan should I choose...? The choice is between eating less, starving myself for a while, working my butt off with exercise or very simply changing the foods eaten and then eating till fully satisfied, doing a few easy exercise and losing weight. Well that choice is easy. Love to eat but only want to do a little exercise then there are

Some change must be made, because we can't keep doing the same things and expect change. But if it is not too dramatic, then it is doable and knowing many others of our generation age 50 to 70 have changed for the better then we only need to follow their example. Another example is my friend Carl. Since he has had back surgery for an old injury he got in a car wreck, he has had to be careful about things like lifting. Newly remarried, he wanted more energy to make all the changes around the house they just started to remodel. So, he used a method to build some strength and allow some more flexibility of movement. Even though, when we lived close next door, we would walk a couple of miles on a regular basis, he wanted more, so he bought a bike. You know those bikes with the big wheels and bigger seats. But they were not too comfortable for him , so he changed models to what they call a recumbent bike, where you almost lie back and peddle from a near prone position. That did the trick for him and now he can go 5 miles easily with his wife for company, while they work on their shapes and build energy. At age 68, he now has the energy for the projects and an altered body image. He also completed two new sheds,and a two story gazebo with an outdoor BBQ area with electricity and water. He has lost about 12 pounds of fat and looks pretty good for an older guy. His wife, who just wanted to be with him for the bike trips, followed the same healthy diet plan and simple exercise plan lost 28 pounds in about 12 weeks. They look great. Both my mom and friend Carl used this program, modified to their needs to make the changes they wanted. One by-product was that they then looked so good with an altered body image. It's modified because, my mom does not do push ups. Instead she leans forward to a counter,puts her hands together, moves her feet back,keeps the back straight and does simple press ups-pushing off the counter with her arms. These have strengthened her core and tightened her arms. It's a great exercise for the triceps. For cardio and general overall health, she walks. Carl mostly bikes and goes fishing...a lot Carl learned the proper way to lift. You use your legs and not your back . Instead of bending over whatever he was lifting,pipes or wood or a bucket of nails, he now squats down,keeps the back straight and lifts with his legs. For cardio, he uses the bike. That also build stronger leg muscle. Both he and his wife and my mom used a plan based on the methods found in truth about abs.
